This story was a secondary idea, in that my coworker was shooting something completely different at the Whitman Stafford House. But while we were there, we interviewed the man in charge so that I was able to get another segment out of the location.
I knew Walt Whitman had stayed in Camden, but I didn’t know how he was a part of this house in Laurel Springs, NJ. Apparently Whitman’s friends, the Staffords, let him stay at their farmhouse and took care of him while he recovered from a stroke. Whitman even mentions this house in one of his editions of Leaves of Grass! It was awesome learning about this tiny, unassuming house in the middle of a neighborhood street – that I would have never given a second thought to on a normal day.
